Introduction

1.1  My perception of the place

In my opinion, I think Taiwan is a food heaven where one can satisfy his or her cravings with the unlimited indulgence of delicious cuisines and street foods from many different regions of China.

It is famous for its street foods along the night markets. Some of the popular cuisines would be the Oyster Omelette, Danzai Noodles and their huge size of Crispy Chicken Cutlet. I have heard that their Pearl Milk Tea which is commonly known as Bubble Tea in Singapore is one of their top ranking beverages among many teenagers and adults too.

It is also a place filled with both highly urban commercialized developments of high-rise buildings in the city areas and beauty of natural landscapes in rural areas like farms and villages.

1.2  Background

Taiwan is around 36,000 square kilometres in size with over 23 million populations. Some of their common languages used are Mandarin, Taiwanese, which is very similar to our “Hokkien” dialect in Singapore, Hakka and various languages of the indigenous groups.

It is also a multicultural nation, consisting different types of religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and Islam. The government - Ma Ying-jeou and other previous presidents had established 9 nationals’ parks and 13 national scenic areas with the purpose of preserving the authenticity of Taiwan’s eco-friendly, historical and cultural sites.
